An interesting update from Reuters about Big tobacco companies resisting admissions of wrongdoing appeared on October 15:

This was right after coming back from presenting the Rutland Ethics Toolbox approach and decision framework at the first biomedical association national congress in Kumasi, Ghana. It may be a country only a fraction of the size of the USA (24 million), but Ghana took a mighty step in July, passing a law that bans smoking in all public places. While it goes much farther than any such law that would ever be passed in the USA, I can tell you that I saw no related trash and the leaders care deeply about the health of their fellow countrymen, especially youth.

Institute Welcomes New Members to the Advisory Board

Research Ethics / Responsible Conduct of Research

In early June the Rutland Institute offered a new Research Ethics/Responsible Conduct of Research workshop in partnership with the Clemson University Office of Research Compliance. The twenty participants included research faculty, staff, and both undergraduate and graduate students involved in research.

Ethics and Creativity in Business – a podcast conversation

Stored away on my computer and never used other than on the day it was recorded back in 2010, I found a podcast interview with Dr. Kathy Kegley of Synchlora LLC. Dr. Kegley is a consultant on creativity and innovation. She thought that a number of projects that had been coordinated through our outreach efforts were creative and innovative.

Since she did periodic shows on Your Day, she asked that I have a conversation with her about the value of ethics when it comes to creativity. If you are so inclined, you may listen to the approximately 12 minute interview (click here)

The Contribution That Can Keep On Giving

After our Tenth Anniversary Gala in April we decided that we wanted to continue our REALeader level of membership in the Rutland Ethics Alliance (created for the tenth anniversary). To do so, we identified a new benefit: the ability to award a scholarship to a K-12 teacher to attend The Ethics Across the Curriculum seminar.

The benefit allows REALeaders to provide some welcome recognition and professional development to a teacher at a school or within a school district of their choosing. We currently have two teachers registered to attend because of scholarships and several other school districts have their principals determining a teacher they’d like to send. It seems like it will be an effective way to spread the philosophy and teaching tools to train more K-12 teachers to comfortably guide their classes through some thorny ethical topics.

Cheating on State Testing Programs

This is a June 25^th article in Ethisphere. Detailed in the article is a tragedy of epic scale across the public schools in our nation. The International Center for AcademicIntegrity (within the Rutland Institute) celebrates its 20^th year in 2012. The majority of its work has focused on “the academy” (colleges and universities), but it has also worked with high schools and some middle schools.

Meth, money and lobbying: Guess who’s the biggest spender again?

Kentucky is a state with a huge methamphetamine abuse problem. This editorial outlines how pharmaceutical companies, through their lobbying association, used their money and influence with legislators to water down laws to limit the sale of an essential drug used to make meth. How many other similar issues occur in the legislatures across the country?
