Research Ethics / Responsible Conduct of Research

In early June the Rutland Institute offered a new Research Ethics/Responsible Conduct of Research workshop in partnership with the Clemson University Office of Research Compliance.  The twenty participants included research faculty, staff, and both undergraduate and graduate students involved in research. 





The diverse group represented fifteen departments, schools and majors, and topics included best practices, responsible conduct, and intellectual property. "The range of participants added to the vitality and success of the workshop" commented Rutland Fellow Charles Starkey, "The participants brought different perspectives, issues, and examples to the table for discussion but were united by their interest in research ethics." 

Julia Frugoli, who is both a Rutland Fellow and Professor in Genetics and Biochemistry, supervises her own research lab in addition to teaching and writing on research ethics and responsible conduct of research. Just recently she was awarded a prestigious NSF grant to continue her study of plant communication. Very relevant to the workshop is a quote from Frugoli that appeared in a CU news release: “Science is about discovering the truth, and it only discovers the truth if it is based on ethical conduct."
