In Medicine: More on Organ Allocation for Transplantation

Dr. Benjamin Hippen, renowned transplantation nephrologist at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and friend of the institute was recently quoted in an article in the Washington Post regarding a new way to allocate kidneys for transplantation:
A few weeks later Ben co-authored an article in the NY Times, The Opinion Pages: How Not to Assign Kidneys
Then in mid-March he had a publication in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine: Risk, Prognosis, and Unintended Consequences in Kidney Allocation. You may view the first part of his article on the New England Journal of Medicine's site, but to read the full content, a subscription is required.
Dr. Hippen spoke at events both on and off campus in 2008 and 2009. The title of one of his talks during his 2009 visit: Organ Sales and Moral Travails: Lessons from the Living Kidney Vendor Program in Iran is from another publication in Policy Analysis.
We appreciate and have high regard for his expertise in this ethically complex topic.

Listed as: Tackling Social Issues: Advanced Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research in Applied Ethics And Ethical Debate, Dr. Kelly Smith is the principal investigator (aka faculty advisor)
Participation in this creative inquiry has been a game changer for students; one that is a competitive advantage for them in life and following their passions. The 2010-2011 team consisted of 10 students total, 5 on the actual team and five assistants

Recent Collaborative Events
On February 23rd the institute co-sponsored a brown bag lunch at Clemson at the Falls, featuring Anna Bernasek. Financial Journalist; Columnist, New York Times; Author of The Economics of Integrity. Anna spoke to a nearly full room of Greenville business people at lunchtime and went on to make another presentation at the Strom Thurmond Institute on the Clemson campus that evening, providing an opportunity for students to attend. Thanks to David Wyman and the Spiro Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership for inviting us to co-sponsor!
Anna’s message especially resonated with me as I see it as making a business case for ethics. I even used it to create a PowerPoint presentation for use at some Rotary clubs. And, it seems that the pendulum is swinging towards more companies realizing, from the superior performance of “ethical” companies, it indeed makes good (and profitable) sense to lead with integrity, ethics and transparency. On April 13th the Rutland Institute in collaboration with the MBA Program sponsored the first annual competition at Clemson at the Falls.
Several years ago we had coordinated two similar events on campus with Caron St. John. Given the 2010 move of the MBA day and evening programs to Clemson at the Falls, it seemed an opportune time to reinvent the competition in its new home this spring. Giving only several weeks’ notice, approaching the busiest time of the academic year, it attracted a few brave souls, seven to be exact, in three teams.
The fact of securing 10 exceptional business leaders and entrepreneurs to judge the competition spoke volumes to the interest in and commitment to ethical leadership in the Upstate business community.
One of the judges, Brice Bay, CEO of Enveritas Group, blogged about it as relates to his business of content management/strategists.
Thanks to all who participated! Looking forward to growing this as an annual event.

Bell’s Crossing Named National School of Character
Providing children in public school with lessons and skills to lead lives of integrity is a formidable challenge. We are proud to have worked on three unique ethics projects with some area middle and high schools. Another Upstate voice on the matter has been Richard Berger, who several years ago started a Facebook group called Character Matters in Greenville SC! Chiefly through word of mouth, 674 like-minded people in the Upstate have found the group and joined. It provides a forum to share news, good and bad, on the “character front.” Several weeks ago Dick posted the following:

I posed the following question to Ed Irick (assistant governor in Rotary District 7750) and Ann Golden, both past presidents of the Rotary Club of Greenville Evening, which sponsors the Early Act First Knight program (You may recall that we’ve had articles about EAFK in Volume 2, Issues 2 and 3.)

Right minded actions: On-site gardens at schools

Fifty-two South Carolina schools, including 15 in the Upstate, won Farm-to-School grants Tuesday to plant on-site fruit and vegetable gardens.
This pilot program provides schools with $3,000 grants to plant gardens and get healthier foods in the schools.
Students will take lead roles in developing the gardens. Clemson University and S.C. Agriculture Department representatives will coach the students. The food grown will be used in school cafeterias and classrooms. (More)
