Fools, knaves, and us
Listening to voices in the public square, it might seem an
unavoidable conclusion that there are only three sorts of persons: fools,
knaves and us, the last being the group to which we belong, which consists of
all and only “constitutionally questioning and critical”[1]
persons whose being such could only be doubted by a fool or a knave.
There are, I suspect, many reasons for this sorry state of
affairs. One reason, cited by many, is a
new media landscape in which consumers of news and commentary find it not only
comfortable but also very easy to hear only the voices of persons with whom
they agree; voices that, as it happens, enthusiastically accept the
responsibility of keeping their audiences up to date on what the fools and
knaves are up to. The general phenomenon
—thinking in terms of an “us” and a “them” (the fools and knaves)— is not new,
of course. So, the explanatory force of
this reason is in fact narrow: it helps to explain the extent or greater intensity
of the phenomenon, but not its source.

To Close out 2013...

This last article caught
my eye and the message was even better than I’d hoped. Consider this a gift to
close out 2013. As you create your 2014 list of things you plan to accomplish, I
hope that it will include acknowledging some failures. Then they can begin to
fade away and you can move on to more successes – and failures – on the journey
we call life.

The assertion that these two these things — responsible action and politics— are incompatible (i.e., strange bedfellows, or like oil and water) is unlikely to meet with resistance. After all, support for this idea is ready to hand: the current crisis in Washington, that is, the shutdown of the federal government and the threat that the debt ceiling will not be raised (i.e., that the United States will not be able to honor legal obligations that were created by Congressional action), is the upshot of action that is crassly political, the rhetorical sound bites to the contrary notwithstanding, and irresponsible. Here I will focus on the latter. The former can scarcely be doubted.

Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl Competition Hosted at Clemson
Clemson University and the Rutland Institute for Ethics are hosting the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl. The competition will take place Saturday November 9th in Daniel Hall on the Clemson University campus. Fourteen teams will participate (some schools are sending two teams). They come from schools in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Washington D.C., and South Carolina.

REALeaders Sponsored 10 K-12 Upstate Teachers in Ethics Across the Curriculum K-12
This is a user-friendly seminar in which abstract theory is avoided in
favor of equipping participants with a few basic tools. It begins with
getting clear about what ethics is and what it isn’t. Hypothetical cases
are used to elicit some basic ethical ideas and develop them in a
user-friendly way; with an eye to application. The aim is to prepare
teachers to integrate ethics into their regular classes by engaging
their students in discussion while modeling for them a systematic,
reflective and responsible approach to ethical issues. Wrong moves that
students will almost certainly make are identified and techniques for
handling them are discussed. In addition to being equipped to engage
students in meaningful ethical discourse, teachers need to “have been
there and done that” to feel truly comfortable integrating ethics into
their regular classes. The seminar is designed to create these “bankable
or take-home experience.”

which students create videos that address questions such as whether student athletes should be
paid, and whether the impact of social media is positive or negative. This semester they are
focusing on academic integrity.
