Business, ethics, and law: Three’s a crowd?
It happens when I read the news. I find myself asking whether there is a
lesson in the story, a take-away beyond a sense of who the bad guys are;
something that casts light on how things might be better than they are, rather
than a strategy for winning in a game where the victor is the one who has more
than the other players when a round of play is over but nothing that would
truly justify a sense of pride in having played the game. I suppose I’ve got an old fashioned idea
about life and work: although you may get dirty, when the day is done, you
should be able to wash it, rather than wish it away.

NEW Opportunity for Involvement: Engineering Ethics Slam

Inspired by Ann Arbor’s “Big Questions Ethics Slam,” the
Rutland Institute for Ethics partnered with the Pearce Center for Professional
Communication’s Client Based Program to create a similar series at Clemson.
This first ethics slam was organized by Angelina Oberdan’s technical writing
students. These students organized the event based on their
research and proposed plan for the event. Not only were they responsible for
self-managing and executing a professional event, they have also been asked to
provide analysis and instructions so that other student groups can hold similar
slams in future semesters.

The Rutland Institute for Ethics Welcomes Its Newest Rutland Fellow

Steven B. Katz has been named a Fellow
of the Rutland Institute of Ethics (Spring 2014). He is the first and only
Fellow from the Department of English. He joined Clemson University to assume
the R. Roy and Marnie Pearce Professor of Communication, and Professor of English,
in 2006, after a twenty-year career in the English Department at North Carolina
State University, where he worked his way through the ranks to become a Full
Professor in 2004.

ICAI Hosts 2014 International Conference on Academic Integrity in Jacksonville, Florida

On March 2, the International
Center for Academic Integrity wrapped up its 22nd annual Conference
on Academic Integrity, with the theme “Confronting the Issues.” With
over 275 registered participants from 12 countries and 6 continents, this
year’s event was by far the most diverse that ICAI has yet experienced.
Dedicated students, staff, faculty, and administration came together to share
their research, academic integrity programs, successes, and challenges in
nearly 60 presentations spread throughout the weekend.

Sarbanes-Oxley Whistle-Blower Shield Expanded by Court;
The Supreme
Court recently handed down a new ruling expanding protection to employees of
contracted firms working for Mutual Fund firms under the whistle-blower feature
of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act by Greg Stohr.
“NationalBusiness Ethics Survey by Ethics resource Center Reveals Decline in WorkplaceMisdeeds, Improvement in Ethics Culture in Past Six Years”
The survey has
many notable findings. For those who do not put much emphasis on the
performance appraisals of managers, some food for thought: “Most Misconduct
Committed by Managers.”

The World's Most Ethical Companies 2014; Susan Adams
A Forbes writer asks the
question of just how valid is the Ethisphere’s list of the World’s Most Ethical
Companies. Read her conclusion. The article contains the list of 144 companies
selected for 2014. Congratulations again to Milliken, Fluor and General
Electric for their 8th of 8 consecutive years making the listing. Other
companies with a local presence on the list: Aramark, Schneider Electric
(France), and Timken.
