Welcome! We are very pleased that you are reading the latest issue RIE’s Issues and Perspectives. We have included brief articles that report on some of the activities of the Rutland Institute and the International Center for Academic Integrity as well as items of interest and prompts for discussion by means of links to several articles in the section, “Ethics Challenges and Responses.”

Rutland Ethics Alliance Seeking Friends to Host Receptions

On October 29th, several of our advisory board members hosted a reception that provided us the opportunity to tell about 20 business and community leaders about the Rutland Institute for Ethics and the Rutland Ethics Alliance. This was a great chance to meet people and initiate a dialogue that will ideally lead to partnering, collaborations and Alliance memberships.

There is a compelling story that needs to be told to more people. If you are interested in hosting a reception, or having us present to a regularly scheduled meeting, please contact Linda Gallicchio, 864.353.2540 or lgalli@clemson.edu to coordinate a date and location. Clemson Ethics Bowl Team Bound for National Competition

Clemson University Ethics Bowl Team

Two-time regional winner: The Clemson Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl team won the fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl by defeating past winner University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in the final round of the competition. The event took place Saturday November, 20 in Richmond, Virginia. On the way to the top Clemson defeated University of Maryland in the semifinal rounds. Other teams at the competition included University of North Carolina-Charlotte and past national champion University of Miami. At last year’s regionals the Clemson team shared the winner’s circle with Miami after an unprecedented tie; this year Clemson bested its previous achievement as the sole winner.

Values in Action

The Rutland Institute for Ethics partnered with several Rotary Clubs in the Upstate in hosting events that supported programs with values that align with the Rutland Toolbox Approach: veracity, justice, fraternity and beneficence. As we all aspire to a better world, we can each take small steps; these are a few.

An Amazing Story of Resilience: Martha in Lattimore

The second colloquium event for this academic year took place on November 12^th when Mary Dalton, Associate Professor of Communication and Co-Director of the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University screened and discussed of her award winning film, Martha in Lattimore. A truly amazing story of resilience, Martha Mason, who contracted polio as a child, lived in an iron lung for over 60 years. If you were unable to attend, take this opportunity to learn more.

The International Center for Academic Integrity

The Center for Academic Integrity has gone global and its name has changed to reflect its international reach. The new name, which was approved by Clemson’s Board of Trustees shortly in April, is “The International Center for Academic Integrity.”
