Welcome!  We are very pleased that you are reading the latest issue RIE’s Issues and Perspectives. We have included brief articles that report on some of the activities of the Rutland Institute and the International Center for Academic Integrity as well as items of interest and prompts for discussion by means of links to several articles in the section, “Ethics Challenges and Responses.”

Although you can read a complete account below, I want to share this news here as well:  Clemson’s Ethics Bowl team won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl at the University of Richmond (November 20, 2010) and thus will participate in the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on March 3^rd at the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Hearty Congratulations to the team and their Coach, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Rutland Institute Fellow. The 5-Day Leadership Summit for High Potential and Emerging Leaders that I told you about in the last issue was held at Clemson at the Falls August 2-6, 2010.  You may recall that PACE, (Professional Advancement and Continuing Education) brought together a consortium of business leaders from Michelin, GE Energy, BMW, Wells-Fargo/Wachovia, Duke Energy, Hubbel Lighting, and RBC Insurance to design the program and, in particular, that they indentified “5 Pillars of Leadership—Integrity, Objectivity, Creativity, Courage and Passion,” as the focal points of this continuing education program.  The Leading with Integrity session began with a talk by RIE Advisory Board member Debra Clements, “A Leader’s View of Integrity.”  I led an interactive session “The Decision Maker’s Toolbox,” and moderated a panel discussion afterward featuring Debra Clements (Milliken & Company), Tom Koepke (Wells Fargo/Wachovia) and Magaly Penn (South Carolina Consumer Affairs and Bi-Lo, LLC). The summit was a great success.  Moving forward it is slated to be an annual event and we expect to be part of it each time.

We are very pleased to have Mr. Julien Camiade, an MBA student and Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from France, working with Associate Director, Linda Gallicchio this academic year.  Among other things, he will be conducting interviews with business leaders in the Upstate for Issues and Perspectives.  The first of these interviews, with Greenville Hospital System President and CEO Mike Riordan, is published in this issue.

The Rutland Institute’s Tenth Anniversary in September 2011 will be pivotal in a major Rutland Ethics Alliance membership campaign.  A Tenth Anniversary Celebration committee, consisting of emeriti RIE Advisory Board members Debbie DuBose (chair), Harry Durham, and Dick Sargent, has been working with Linda Gallicchio and Advisory Board Chair Joe Turner to plan a grand anniversary celebration. You will be hearing more about the event as details are finalized.
