The Greenville Evening Rotary Club to host its First Annual Joust for Fun Live Jousting Event

The Greenville Evening Rotary Club will host its First Annual Joust for Fun live jousting event on October 30, 2010 at Riverbend Equestrian Park. Proceeds from this event will benefit the EarlyAct FirstKnight (EAFK) program.

The Greenville Evening Rotary Club will bring the medieval times to the upstate on October 30 when warhorses adorned with medieval drapings race onto the field at Riverbend Equestrian Park near Furman University in a live jousting event. In addition to the main event, there will be costume contests, strolling musicians, storytellers, jesters, photos with horses and knights, inflatables, magicians, pony rides, hay rides, a petting zoo, tug of war, face painting, balloon twisters, food and souvenirs.

Ethical Dilemmas Associated with Vaccinations: A Public Health Perspective

The H1N1 Pandemic Influenza outbreak of 2009 is the fourth major medical pandemic in the past 100 years. The Centers for Disease Control emphasize that vaccination is the best way to provide protection from influenza. Research indicates that flu shots are almost 88% effective at reducing the risk of flu infection and that they reduced by one-half the number of deaths among hospital patients from the disease. Despite recommendations, rates of vaccinations are seen as falling short of their full potential to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States and abroad. Personal autonomy, an important value within the ethical framework of our society, is viewed as a roadblock in accomplishing greater vaccination rates.

We have heard the much-repeated proverbs, "Be honest with yourself. "Honesty is the best policy". And there is the Shakespeare verse, "To thine own self be true". After majoring in Biology at Furman University, I am eternally convinced that there is a component in our DNA that encourages us to favor good above evil, honesty above dishonesty, giving above taking, serving above being served and seeking to make our community better, not worse.

100 Most ethical Companies


Ethisphere just recently published its 2010 list of the 100 Most Ethical Companies. Congratulations to Upstate businesses Milliken and Company and Fluor for once again making the list!

According to the article, the 2010 companies outperformed the S&P 500 with a 53% return as compared to a 4% return for the S&P 500. Doug Cornelius’ website, Compliance Building, took a look back to 2007, the first year of the Ethisphere 100 Most Ethical Companies list, to see whether it was true over time. Reflections

I couldn’t resist sharing this personal experience. Has something similar ever happened to you?

We were in the process of refinancing our house at the end of last year. I’d made out the check to pay our property taxes and placed it in a stack of letters to be mailed. Just after the letters had been mailed we were notified that closing would occur the next day. Since we don’t have our tax funds held in escrow, it was going to be a problem to not have proof of the paid taxes. I called the clerk’s office and was told that I could come in person to pay the taxes and get a receipt. When their office received the duplicate payment by mail, she said that they were legally bound to refund any over payment. I thought “Great! Problem solved”. We went on to an uneventful refinance closing.

This past January, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Greenville Evening and the Knights of the Guild (a non-profit educational services organization), Powdersville Middle School implemented a new character education program. EarlyAct FirstKnight™ (EAFK) is a revolutionary character and ethics education program for students in grades K-8 that teaches business ethics based on the historic theme of noble knights and the Rotary tradition of “service above self.”
