J.T. Barton Jr. Ethics Essay Scholarship Competition

The winners of the 9th Annual J.T. Barton Jr. Ethics Essay Competition received their awards at the Honors and Awards Ceremony of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities on April 5th.

News stories and widespread discussion about “Octomom” Nadya Suleman prompted the question at the heart of this year’s topic: Should people have to have a license to be parents? Resources and specific questions were available on the Rutland Institute Web site to help students prepare to write their essays. For example, students were asked to think about whether there is a fundamental right to reproduce, whether some people are unfit to be parents and whether low or no-cost fertility treatments should be provided to those unable to conceive.
