Clemson University and the Rutland Institute for Ethics are hosting the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl. The competition will take place Saturday November 9th in Daniel Hall on the Clemson University campus. Fourteen teams will participate (some schools are sending two teams). They come from schools in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Washington D.C., and South Carolina.
Like the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Bowl provides an opportunity for students to engage in thoughtful consideration of important ethical issues. The regional ethics bowls serve as Qualifiers for the National Ethics Bowl, which will take place February 27th 2014, in Jacksonville, Florida. Only teams that participate in a regional bowl and rank among the best are eligible to compete in the National Bowl. Teams consist of 3-5 undergraduates coached by faculty or graduate students, who have spent time researching and analyzing 15 cases, prepared by the Regional Ethics Bowl writing committee.
Clemson's Orange Wave Ethics Bowl team has an enviable record in both regional and national competitions. Clemson was national champion in 2008 and finished second in the national competition in 2009 and 2012. The team finished first in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Rutland Institute Fellow Charles Starkey coaches the team; former ethics bowler and current graduate student James Taylor is the assistant coach. The team is sponsored by the Rutland Institute and the Department of Philosophy and Religion.
