Reflecting…and Moving Forward

As the Rutland Institute for Ethics approaches its tenth anniversary in September, the need for programs and resources that nurture ethical environments and promote ethical judgment and effective decision-making are more important than ever.

Integrity, honor and ethical leadership are core to the institute and link it firmly to Thomas Green Clemson’s call for Clemson University to be a “high seminary of learning” and a driver of economic development.

In this e-newsletter you will find pieces citing the wisdom of businesses focusing on a culture of ethics. The case is made that integrity is a competitive advantage. Other pieces share information on some effective programs at the elementary and middle school levels. It all fits together, right here in the Upstate. The Rutland Institute for Ethics helps to “connect the dots” as we strive to build on the legacy of Clemson and the mission to serve South Carolina as its land grant university.

The Rutland Ethics Alliance (REA)was initiated as a vehicle to bring operating funds into the Rutland Institute for Ethics. REA was started right at the beginning of what is now referred to as the great recession. Although a challenging environment to begin a member organization, a group of founding members stepped up to the opportunity to align themselves with  the goals of the institute. Some have continued, others have joined. And we have so far to go! That’s why last year I reached out within Clemson for help.

Thanks to a very talented graduate student in the Master of Arts in Professional Communication, we are proud to share the new logo of the Rutland Ethics Alliance and corresponding website.

Paula Sullivan took on the challenge of creating the logo and website as her masters project in MAPC. In May she successfully defended the project, receiving honors, with distinction.

She has created a great canvas for us and will be working with me throughout the summer, continuing to fine tune existing content, add more and transition our main page to a similar looking format. Stay tuned. There is still so much to do. We recognize that a good website is routinely changing, adding current, relevant content.  Comments and suggestions are welcome: lgalli@clemson.edu

As you check out the site, we ask that you view the membership levels in the alliance and make a gift.   Your contribution counts towards the Will to Lead campaign
