The Economics of Integrity

On February 23^rd the institute co-sponsored a brown bag lunch at Clemson at the Falls, featuring Anna Bernasek. Financial Journalist; Columnist, New York Times; Author of The Economics of Integrity. Anna spoke to a nearly full room of Greenville business people at lunchtime and went on to make another presentation at the Strom Thurmond Institute on the Clemson campus that evening, providing an opportunity for students to attend. Thanks to David Wyman and the Spiro Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership for inviting us to co-sponsor!

Anna’s message especially resonated with me as I see it as making a business case for ethics. I even used it to create a PowerPoint presentation for use at some Rotary clubs. And, it seems that the pendulum is swinging towards more companies realizing, from the superior performance of “ethical” companies, it indeed makes good (and profitable) sense to lead with integrity, ethics and transparency. The First Annual MBA Ethical Leadership Case Competition at CATF

On April 13^th the Rutland Institute in collaboration with the MBA Program sponsored the first annual competition at Clemson at the Falls. 

Several years ago we had coordinated two similar events on campus with Caron St. John. Given the 2010 move of the MBA day and evening programs to Clemson at the Falls, it seemed an opportune time to reinvent the competition in its new home this spring. Giving only several weeks’ notice, approaching the busiest time of the academic year, it attracted a few brave souls, seven to be exact, in three teams.

The fact of securing 10 exceptional business leaders and entrepreneurs to judge the competition spoke volumes to the interest in and commitment to ethical leadership in the Upstate business community.

One of the judges, Brice Bay, CEO of Enveritas Group, blogged about it as relates to his business of content management/strategists.
