Ethics Across the Curriculum

We started doing ethics across the curriculum seminars ten years ago (the pilot seminar preceded the establishment of the Rutland Center --now Institute-- for Ethics). We are very pleased that faculty from other schools have participated in the seminar here on our campus. We are also pleased with the success we have had taking the seminar on the road.

This summer we did customized versions of the seminar for two groups of high school faculty in Anderson District 5. (One of them was an element of EMRGE (Ethics in Medical Research and Genetic Engineering) the SC LIFE 2009-2010 Community project discussed in this issue.) And in September we conducted an EAC seminar for faculty at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. We are scheduled to do an EAC seminar for faculty at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in the spring.

Ethics Across the Curriculum has become an international movement. We have been part of it from the very beginning. We were there at the first international conference in 2000 and at the conference in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2001 when the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum was born. C. Calhoun Lemon Fellow Stephen Satris is a member of SEAC’s Executive Committee and serves on the editorial board of the Society’s journal Teaching Ethics. RIE director Daniel Wueste is president of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum. He was recently reelected to a second term, which runs until December 31, 2012.
